Abstract

BERTA is an LMFBR accident code to calculate the mechanical energy load of the reactor tank after fuel vapour expansion and to assess the instantaneous radiological source term in case of a Bethe-Tait accident. FAUST is an experimental research program to investigate bubble behaviour and aerosol transport after discharge of a gas-particle mixture from a pressurized source into a water or sodium pool. For experimental verification, BERTA was applied to the FAUST conditions, mainly to compare the oscillation periods of the bubble after discharge. This is the first attempt to verify BERTA by an experiment. Tests and computations agree remarkably well. For comparison, results from the simpler adiabatic model PAROGA are included.
