Abstract

The model hamiltonian with two coupling constants between the low and high frequency vibrations of a linear AH⋯B system is studied. The results show that the wave functions and energy levels of this hamiltonian obtained by exact diagonalisation can be adequately approximated by the wave functions and energy levels of a harmonic “effective hamiltonian”. The experimental spectrum of (CH 3)O⋯HCl in the stretching region was reconstituted by means of this model.
