Abstract

A new definition of the mode-field radius (MFR) of a non-circular field single-mode fibre (NCSMF) is proposed, based on the quadratic moment of far-field distribution. Relations between MFR and splice loss, propagation constant and waveguide dispersion of the NCSMF are derived, which reduce to known results under cases of circular and Gaussian-elliptic field distribution.
