Abstract

With broadband saturable absorption properties and a high third-order nonlinear optical susceptibility, α-Fe2O3 exhibits potential applications in nonlinear optics. In this study, α-Fe2O3 nanosheets are embedded into polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) films to fabricate thin-film saturable absorbers (SAs) that feature an uninterrupted broad absorption band spanning over 2000 nm and a modulation depth of 16.13%. In α-Fe2O3-PVA SA-based erbium-doped fiber lasers, two stable mode-locked operations are achieved: dark-bright pulse pairs and bright solitons. The results indicate that α-Fe2O3 nanosheets are excellent candidates for two-dimensional saturable absorption materials.
