Abstract

Results of a detailed linewidth theory for DFB lasers are presented. We show that fluctuations in the longitudinal distributions of photon and carrier densities can have a significant effect on the linewidth. A new type of linewidth rebroadening is identified, which is attributed to modal instability. This may explain the rebroadening observed in cases with high sidemode suppression.
