Abstract

We propose mode-group (MG) division multiplexing in a MIMO-free configuration to increase the capacity and the flexibility in reduced-complexity spatial division multiplexed metro networks. We take in account innovative few mode fibers (FMFs) supporting a large number of spatial modes, which allow to select suitable combinations of MGs providing limited crosstalk. Network provisioning in metro rings is investigated starting from experiments with up to 48-Tb/s capacity in a 5 MG FMF employing also a purposely developed quality of transmission tool.
