Abstract

The paleogeography in the Mediterranean during the Upper Miocene is highly variable from place to place, before and after the salinity crisis. A brief review is given of the different sections observed in several parts of the Mediterranean. The Messinian, as a stage must be defined by precise biostratigraphy, as recommended by the International Subcommission on Stratigraphical Classification.
