Abstract

This paper presents a model-based subspace fault detection method for static and dynamic rotor imbalance faults. This output-only method uses an asymptotic local approach that is sensitive to small changes in modal structure. The method was originally developed for stationary structures but is adapted here for constant-speed rotating machines. Two models of an idealized rotating machine are also presented and used to demonstrate the subspace fault detection method: a simulation based on rigid body and flexible rotor dynamics, and a laboratory apparatus that demonstrates the method on a physical system with limited instrumentation.
