Abstract
In this example, the modal response spectrum (MRS) method of analysis is used to analyze a sixstory moment resisting frame. The analysis is performed in accordance with Section 12.9 of ASCE 7. The results from the MRS analysis are compared to the results obtained from an equivalent lateral force (ELF) analysis of the same frame. In most cases, an MRS analysis is carried out using commercial finite element analysis software. For this example, however, the analysis is performed using a set of Mathcad routines that have been developed by the author. The use of Mathcad provides details of the analysis that are not easily extracted from the commercial software.
