Abstract

Modal noise in optical fibers has been previously studied when the propagating modes are completely uncorrelated. In this paper we present a phenomenological approach to the case in which some correlation among the guided modes is present. The obtained signal-noise ratios can be described by a simple expression which fits the experimental results quite well.
