Abstract

The increasing number of motor vehicles may bring numerous adverse effects on the environment. One effort to reduce the adverse impact is to promote environmentally friendly transportation systems, including the concept of bicycle sharing. The use of bicycle does not cause any pollution, thus becoming a potential solution in reducing greenhouse gases. The city of Surakarta has been a tourist destination in which a lot of tourist attractions are popular among the tourist, therefore Surakarta is one of the suitable cities to apply the concept of bicycle-sharing. The purpose of this research is to establish the model and determine the probability of choosing the mode between the bicycle and the pedicab in the tourist attractions in Surakarta City, Central Java, Indonesia. The data was collected by interview and questionnaire to 289 respondents who were the visitors of Benteng Vastenburg and Surakarta Palace or Keraton Surakarta. The variables examined in this research are cost, travel time, and comfort. The amount of each variable can be estimated with the equation: Usp-b = 1.028 – 0.000099 (Bsp - Bb) - 0.245 (Wsp - Wb) + 1.954 (Csp - Cb). Where Usp-b is the utility difference between bicycle and pedicab, Bsp is the cost of bicycle, Bb is the cost of pedicab, Wsp is the travel time of bicycle, Wb is the travel time of pedicab, Csp is the comfort level of biicycle and Cb is the comfort level of pedicab. From the data analysis, the highest probability of people o use bicycle is obtained when the cost of the pedicab is high, the traveling time of the bicycle is normal, the traveling time of the pedicab is too long, and the comfort of bicycle is high, with probability of 95.16%. The probability of bicycle is for 84% accuracy rate. The increasing number of motor vehicles may bring numerous adverse effects on the environment.
