Abstract

Long span bridges are predominantly prone to vibrations when loaded. Structural vibrations are initiated by dynamic periodic forces like wind, people, traffic and even by pedestrian loading. The increase in span length of long span bridges decreases the natural frequencies of the structure thereby subjecting it to the adverse effect of various combined dynamic forces. It is critical to determine the natural frequencies and periods of such structures in order to avoid the formation of resonance, which is hazardous to the structure's safety. This paper exemplify the natural period and mode shapes of a real time long span arch bridge by performing Eigen value analysis of the structure using midas Civil. The software's results are compared to similar work done using ABAQUS. The results obtained with midas Civil are in good agreement with those obtained with ABAQUS, indicating the suitability of employing midas Civil and the acceptance of the generated model for further analysis.
