Abstract

Although the field of fashion is a subject that feeds from different disciplines of social sciences, fashion research and studies have not yet become a discipline that is considered at an academic level. However, it is noticed that academic research in fashion studies has increased in recent years. Fashion studies have great potential to examine many different aspects of fashion. The understanding provided by the qualitative research tradition in the emergence of subjects such as fashion communication, fashion sociology, and fashion philosophy cannot be denied. In this study, the relationship between the qualitative research derived from the hermeneutic paradigm and the fashion field is analyzed and the existing academic studies are interpreted from the perspective of fashion studies. The aim of this study is to explain the development of fashion studies and to present a conceptual framework for fashion research, using the perspective of qualitative research. With the determination of the fact that fashion studies are a new academic research field, the difficulties that await fashion researchers are indicated, and suggestions are made based on the literature analysis in order to overcome these difficulties.
