Abstract

HUMORAL involvement in the carbohydrate metabolism of Periplaneta americana (L.) has been reported by Steele1, who demonstrated a 150 per cent increase in blood trehalose and a drop in blood glucose following injection of an aqueous extract of the corpus cardiacum. The work recorded here, conducted as part of an overall investigation of the regulation of sugar utilization in the South American cockroach, Blaberus discoidalis (Serville), confirms the rise in trehalose, but reveals also a significant increase in blood glucose and a concomitant decrease in fat body glycogen.
