Abstract

This is a critical review of the nomenclature of geosynclines, offering for discussion certain terms for mobile (geosynclinal-folded) provinces of the world. Discussion is limited essentially to post-Proterozoic structures, concentrating on mobile segments of the crust, as arranged in belts, on a planetary scale. These include the Mediterranean and Pacific mobile belts, the Central Asian mobile belt and the Ural-north Tien Shan and circum-Arctic mobile belts.--M. Russell.
