Abstract

AbstractIn energy constricted underwater wireless sensor networks (UWSN), time synchronization is a critical and challenging issue. Recently, numerous time synchronization protocols have been proposed for terrestrial wireless sensor networks, but they could not be directly applied to UWSN. It is because most of them do not consider about long propagation delay and sensor node mobility, which are important characteristics in UWSN. In this paper, we propose a Mobile Counteracted Time Synchronization approach, called “Mc-Sync”, which is a novel time synchronization scheme for mobile underwater acoustic sensor networks. It makes use of two mobile reference nodes to counteract the effect of node mobility. Analysis and simulation results show that Mc-Sync outperforms existing time synchronization schemes significantly.Keywordstime synchronizationmobile reference nodenode mobilityunderwater sensor networks
