Abstract
Multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) games such as League of Legends (LoL) belong to the most played competitive game genres. This genre also represents a significant part of the electronic sports (e-sports) domain. MOBA e-sports events enjoy growing popularity in recent years, for example, concerning the number of spectating fans and cash prizes for e-sports teams within the range of several million dollars for single tournaments. This is also a reason for the growing demand for professional training methodologies in this developing area. In this paper, we introduce MOBA Coach, an information visualization tool that enables e-sports coaches to analyze past matches and includes functionality for performing coaching activities, such as discussing tactics with a team. We describe the concepts of MOBA Coach and demonstrate its advantages implementing it in the example of LoL data. We conducted an expert user study with eight professional coaches and players among the top 10.632% of the world’s competitive LoL players to evaluate our tool. Based on statistically significant measures, we conclude that our participants could use MOBA Coach successfully to analyze MOBA matches and we elaborate on the suitability of different views we provide on the match data. Furthermore, we could point out that MOBA Coach has the potential to add value to the MOBA coaching toolchain.
