Abstract

The propofol sedation method for deep sedation during endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) is not established yet. Because of very short duration of propofol action, it is frequently more difficult to maintain constant level of sedation, required for the therapeutic procedure such as ERCP, by intermittent bolus injection of propofol compared to continuous infusion. This fluctuation of sedation level sometimes makes it difficult to perform complex therapeutic endoscopic procedures. This study was conducted to compare sedation efficiency, safety and satisfaction by endoscopist and assistants between continuous infusion and intermittent bolus injection of propofol for deep sedation during ERCP.
