Abstract
Biliary obstruction can be treated endoscopically during ERCP with placement of plastic stents, uncovered metal stents or fully covered metal stents. Patients treated with plastic biliary stents are generally managed with scheduled stent exchanges while no follow-up is recommended for patients with metal stent placement. Whether scheduled plastic stent exchanges results in reduced incidence of cholangitis and improved outcomes compared with metal stent placement has not been thoroughly evaluated.
