Abstract
Due to globalization, Slovenian society is becoming increasingly bilingual and even multilingual. This article presents the opinions of preschool teachers on the acquisition of the Slovenian language by immigrant children. In a survey in which 163 preschool teachers participated, the respondents agreed most with the statement that a child needs a safe environment to learn the language of their surroundings in an optimal manner, and least with the statement that we have guidelines at kindergarten level for working with children whose mother tongue is not Slovene. The respondents identified kindergarten as an important factor for the acquisition of Slovene as a second/foreign language.
