Abstract

Zinc phosphate glasses codoped at various compositions of Mn2+ and Eu3+ were successfully prepared. All samples were highly transparent. All samples were characterized with absorption, excitation, emission and mean life time measurements. The Mn2+ ion presents double green and red emissions due to a simultaneous four and six folded coordination. An energy transfer is shown to happen by exciting the 6A1(S) → 4E(D) transition of the Mn2+ ion to the 7F0→5D1 and 7F0→5D0 levels of Eu3+ that increase the emission efficiency of the later and this is proved in the Mn2+ reduced and non-exponential decay. An energy diagram is presented to show the mechanism of this energy transfer.
