Abstract

Ilmenite crystals incorporated into epidote phenocrysts of porphyry dikes contain up to 8.8 wt % ZnO and 20 wt % MnO. These crystals, less than 50 μm in size, are associated with rutile, pyrite, pyrrhotite inclusions and are characterized by nonuniform Zn distribution. Ilmenite microphenocrysts 100–200 μm in size that occur in the muscovite-epidote-quartz-feldspar groundmass contain up to 2.4 wt % ZnO and 10–20 wt % MnO. It is suggested that the formation of Mn- and Zn-bearing ilmenite is related to impact of hydrous oxidized melt on the sulfide-bearing crustal rocks, giving rise to sphalerite decomposition.
