Abstract

Chapter 4 introduced the Manufacturing Message Specification (MMS) as an application layer protocol for communication with manufacturing devices. MMS is defined independently of the device on which it is used. Indeed, MMS was designed to be applicable to a wide spectrum of industrial devices, from numerical controllers (NCs) of machines to Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs). This approach is characterised by the introduction of the VMD (Virtual Manufacturing Device) abstraction, which is central to MMS.
