Abstract

Objective To investigate MMP-2 and TIMP- 1 mRNA and the effect of curcumin in liver fibrosis rat. Methods Models of liver fibrosis in rats induced by subcutaneously injection of CCl4 were treated with curcumin ormalotilate as positive control. The levels of HA, LN, PC Ⅲ and IVC in serum and histological changes in liver tissue were determined to reveal the event liver damage. MMP -2 and TIMP - 1 mRNA expression in liver tissues were determined by RT-PCR. Results Curcumin significantly reduced the levels of HA, LN, PC Ill and IVC in serum and liver fibrosis was also improved. Curcumin also inhibited MMP -2 and TIMP- 1 mRNA expression in live tissues induced by CCl4. Conclusions Cur-cumin may have therapeutic effect on liver fibrosis by inhibiting MMP - 2 and TIMP - 1 expression. Key words: Curcumin ; Liver fibrosis ; Matrix metalloproteinase - 2 ; Tissue inhibitor of metallo-proteinase - 1
