Abstract

Pierre Rétat : «Mémoires pour l'histoire des sciences et des beaux-arts » : THE importance of the title and the enterprise. The complete title of the Jesuits' periodical, founded in 1701, is significant for an understanding of its importance in its political and cultural context. They were playing on the modernity of the vocabulary : " Memoirs " are the ideal vehicle for historical and scientific information and a guarantee of honesty and modesty. Directed at a cultivated public, it reflected the mentality of the age. Its foundation, in 1699-1702, shows the Jesuits' desire to back up royal cultural policy, and the Catholic campaign against " heretics ". A content analysis of the M.T.'s first 2 years (1701-1702) confirms this double preoc¬ cupation and shows how they used an ostensibly scientific organ for a subtle policy of intervention in the " Republic of Letters
