Abstract

This paper presents the overview of MMIC technologies in Japan for the wireless communication systems. Device and process technology status in the microwave and millimeter-wave frequency range are shown. Especially, for multimedia wireless communications, millimeter-wave systems are advantageous because of wide bandwidth, fine beam forming, compact size and so forth. A 60GHz-band MMIC chip set for short range wireless communication systems and compact multi-chip transmitter/receiver modules have been demonstrated. Their features are the use of 60GHz-band dielectrically stabilized fundamental oscillators and wideband power amplifiers. Furthermore, high reliability millimeter-wave MMIC technology has been developed, and 3 dimensional master-slice MMIC approach has been proposed and demonstrated toward low cost and mass production.
