Abstract

This paper presents a detailed phasor domain model of a Modular Multilevel Converter (MMC). The proposed model is based on a new nonlinear average MMC model in rotating dq frame. The model is developed using zero sequence, fundamental and second harmonic frames with neglected higher dynamics. A generic mathematical solution is introduced for transferring non-linear multiplication terms into rotating dq frame. The accuracy of the proposed model is verified against a detailed dynamic MMC benchmark model in PSCAD for a range of operating conditions and parameters. The model is further employed for studying circulating current magnitude for different MMC passive components.
