Abstract
FIRST suggested as a replacement for ILS some 20 years ago, the time referenced scanning beam Microwave Landing System (MLS) was adopted as an international standard by ICAO in 1978. After many changes, the transition date at which MLS becomes the preferred precision landing aid is now 1998, with ILS downgraded to an optional system. An extension to the ILS protection date extends it to beyond 2000, which means that in some regions ILS will be retained in operational service for many years. However, it is intended to install MLS at major European airports during the early 1990's and the first FAA system is scheduled for introduction in 1989 in the USA.
