Abstract

GUV fluctuation analysis of vesicles containing 40% DOPE in POPC report a low bending modulus that is 77% of the full POPC bending modulus. Extrapolating to 100% DOPE yields a bilayer that is 43% as stiff. Building on the theory of Leibler (1986) that compositional mixtures appear softer as a result of composition-undulation coupling, we combine experimental fluctuation data with simulation and theoretical analysis to justify this as a significant contribution to the mechanism of softening.
