Abstract

To introduce the concept of a mixture of perfect gases. To redefine the equation of state for a perfect gas as applicable to constituent gases. To define Dalton’s law of partial pressures. To evaluate the thermodynamic properties of a mixture of gases using the Gibbs–Dalton law. To introduce psychrometry as the study of mixtures of dry air and water vapour. To define the amount of water vapour present through: specific humidity relative humidity To introduce the psychrometric chart as a process diagram. To discuss the use of dry-bulb and wet-bulb temperatures for the evaluation of relative humidity. To define the dew-point of a mixture of air and water vapour. To describe the basic psychrometric processes of heating, dehumidification and humidification. To discuss the psychrometric operation of air-conditioners, tumble dryers and cooling towers.
