Abstract
Low-cost power splitting and star-coupling using large-core polymer optical fibers (POFs) are studied. Tapered and untapered mix- ing rods are used to form 137 and 737 couplers. Excess loss and coupling uniformity of a 15 cm length tapered mixing-rod based 137 coupler are measured to be 1.72 dB and 1.0 dB. The average excess loss and uniformity for a 18 cm mixing-rod length 737 star-coupler are 1.38 dB and 1.91 dB, respectively. © 1999 Society of Photo-Optical Instrumenta- tion Engineers.
