Abstract

Abstract Oxygen availability is critical for microbial growth in various bioreactors. Therefore, mixing is a common operation, which is usually performed by shaker, agitator, or both. Power consumption is an important quantitative parameter in describing flow regime and mass transfer characteristics in fermenters and in designing and operating them. In this chapter, mixing and oxygen transfer modeling in shake flasks are introduced and methods to measure power consumption are discussed.
