Abstract

The function of the cardiorespiratory system is to supply the cells with an adequate amount of oxygen. The amount of oxygen supplied at any time to the tissues should be proportional to their needs. An inadequate oxygen supply would result in tissue hypoxia with development of lactic acidosis. Indeed, the oxygen uptake by the tissues should be equal to their oxygen requirements. If oxygen availability becomes insufficient, the cells develop anaerobic metabolism with subsequent increase in lactate production [1].
