Abstract

A numerical scheme for computation of surge propagation within a channel is developed. The technique uses finite differences for space derivatives and a fourth-order Runge-Kutta method for time integration. The system is applied to a simple wave propagation in a straight uniform channel with and without friction to verify the procedure and numerical stability. The numerical scheme is then used to investigate the surge propagation observed during Hurricane Betsy, September, 1965, in the lower reaches of the Mississippi River. Good agreement with observations is obtained. The procedure is then applied assuming higher river stages. The use of such a numerical integration scheme appears to be extremely effective; the results are accurate and computing time is comparatively short.
