Abstract

SUMMARY Recurrence equations are derived for the gametic and genotypic frequencies at a tetrasomic locus with two alleles where reproduction occurs in non-overlapping generations in a large population with constant proportion s of selling and 1-s outcrossing. The equilibrium frequencies are determined in terms of the gene frequency, s, and a, the frequency of double reduction at the locus. General expressions are given which allow the genotypic frequencies in any generation to be calculated readily in terms of s, at and initial frequencies. Several methods of estimating s are considered and it is suggested that for a tetrasomic species, such as alfalfa, it would be worthwhile to obtain and compare estimates of s in several ways.
