Abstract
Abstract Dasysiphonia chejuensis I.K. Lee et J.A. West (Dasyaceae, Ceramiales) collected at Seongsanpo, Cheju Islands, Korea, is dioecious and shows a mainly Polysiphonia-type life history in culture, although some bisexual plants, bisexual plants bearing tetrasporangia, and female plants forming tetrasporangia also occur. Nuclear DNA contents were estimated from DAPI-staining, using image processing. Nuclear DNA contents of apical and subapical cells in male and female gametophytes and female/tetrasporangial plants were about half that of tetrasporophytes. Nuclear DNA contents of tetrasporangium initial cells in female/tetrasporangial plants were about half that of tetrasporophytes. These results have confirmed that gametophytes and female/tetrasporangial plants are haploid and tetrasporophytes diploid. Female plants bearing tetrasporangia transmitted this feature genetically through successive generations, presumably by means of apomictically formed tetraspores. Results of crosses and spore analyses sug...
