Abstract
A vanadium-based alloy (V-5Cr-5Ti) was evaluated to determine if this tough alloy followed the trend of other tough materials under mixed mode I/III loading. At 100 C, the alloy annealed at 1,125 C for one hour in vacuum exhibited excellent fracture toughness while it exhibited a mixture of microvoid coalescence and intergranular failure. Its J[sub TC] values are comparable to those of a tough ferritic/martensitic stainless steel.
