Abstract

This chapter argues that a variety of constructions in a variety of languages, which are basically clausal but also have certain nominal properties, can be analyzed within the version of Principles and Parameters theory (PpP) as extended projections, structures in which a verb is associated with one or more nominal functional categories. It provides constructions from English, Turkish, Tabasaran, Spanish, Basque, Polish, Greek, Georgian, Kabardian, and Irish, and classifies the various constructions according to how much verbal functional structure they possess. The chapter argues that the presented proposal correctly predicts that certain phenomena do not occur. It then outlines some other analyses of some of the phenomena, and considers a question that arises from the presented proposal. The chapter suggests that all constructions involve what Grimshaw calls a mixed extended projection, a structure in which a verb is associated with one or more nominal functional categories. Keywords: Grimshaw; extended projections; nominal functional categories; Principles and Parameters theory (PpP); verbal functional structure
