Abstract

Direct laser vaporization of pellets made of aluminum oxide and indium oxide was used to form mixed-metal oxide cations in a Fourier transform mass spectrometer. Indium-rich species dominate the ion abundance distribution, even when a 17-to-1 molar ratio of aluminum to indium is used. The reactivity of two series of ions, Al x In y O + ( x+ y=2) and Al x In y O + 2 ( x+ y=3), with N 2O and NO 2 was studied. The presence of indium in the reactant ion acts to strongly inhibit oxidation.
