Abstract

We detail the results from integration/test (I&T) of the first beam switch module (BSM) for the VIRUS2 instrument. The BSM acts as a switch that splits wavelengths and scrambles beams, aiming for high-throughput delivery of bandpass-matched stable point spread functions to each of 24 VIRUS2 unit-spectrographs. The BSM is one possible blueprint of a dedicated device that streamlines a “mix and match” process between different spatial samples at the telescope focus and different kinds of back-end spectrographs tuned for a variety of band-passes and spectral/spatial samplings, potentially beneficial to wide/deep surveys on the Extremely Large Telescopes.
