Abstract
Catheter-based therapy of mitral regurgitation draws more and more attention as an alternative treatment for high risk surgical patients. Different technical solutions are under investigation. While most of the techniques are addressing the mitral annulus, the MitraClip therapy provides catheter-based leaflet repair. A clip delivered by a catheter coapts the leaflets at the origin of the regurgitant jet and creates a double orifice valve. The therapy has been under investigation in the pivotal US EVEREST trials and results of the therapy in comparison to surgery have been presented. More than 1500 patients have been treated with the technique in Europe after CE mark approval. In this article the procedure is described. Patient selection and first clinical results are discussed.
