Abstract
Maize is one of the most important cereals globally and a promising cereal supplement in Iraq. The current study was carried out to determine traits of chromosome number and behavior using cytological analysis among 10 maize genotypes cultivated in Iraq. Karyotype, number of chromosome and meiotic coupling behavior in metaphase-I for hybrid and species can supply beneficial data of the estimate for taxonomic relationships. Current study certain the existence of 20 chromosomes at Zea mays L. at metaphase. Chromosomal behavior was studied genotypes belonging to the same species. The results of this section showed that, chromosomal behavior was often regular; also meiotic irregularities were observed such as lagging chromosomes and asynchronous in outset of some meiosis phases.
