Abstract

Purpose: Mitochondrial machinery loss provokes chondrocyte dysfunction, which speeds up cartilage degeneration and osteoarthritis (OA). Mitophagy is an organelle autophagy related to disposal of dysfunctional mitochondria, indispensably maintaining intracellular homeostasis and cell fate. Little is characterized mitophagic reactions within articular chondrocytes in OA joints. This study is undertaken to the biological function of mitophagy to chondrocyte fate in OA cartilage.
