Mitochondrial dysfunction has been implicated in stress-related conditions and psychiatric illnesses. Recently, a measure of mitochondrial respiratory chain enzymatic activity was found to correlate to stress and emotional states in a human sample. Here, we report the first application of a modified version of this metric (MHIm) to major depressive disorder (MDD) and relate it to biomarkers of cellular stress and symptoms of depression.
