Abstract
The function and structure of mitochondria from five control dogs and five dogs with experimentally produced right ventricular hypertrophy and congestive heart failure were studied. Mitochondria from control and experimental dogs were not different with respect to oxidation rates, respiratory control ratios, efficiency of oxidative phosphorylation, or oligomycin sensitivity. Electron microscopic examination revealed no differences in the structure of isolated mitochondria or of mitochondria in tissue sections from control or experimental animals. It was concluded that mitochondria isolated from the hypertrophied, failing canine myocardium are neither functionally nor structurally different from those in the normal animal.
