Abstract

In order to mitigate seismic risk, a full range of actions, from prevention to emergency and post-emergency management, from awareness campaigns to preparedness must be undertaken. These actions are usually carried out by several subjects, among which the Civil Protection authorities are the most involved ones and in the entire cycle of activities. From an engineering point of view this implies several technical activities, some of which are quite peculiar. Very often, actions for seismic risk prevention are undertaken after destructive earthquakes that have a great impact on public opinion. This is the case of the S.Giuliano Earthquake of October 31st, 2002, which was not a big earthquake but was quite shocking, because of the death of 27 children in their collapsed school. In the paper the full range of actions undertaken by the Italian Civil Protection aimed at mitigating seismic risk after the S.Giuliano earthquake are described.
