Abstract

One of the most appealing tools in power industry in recent decades is the fuzzy logic controllers. The PI and FOPI controllers warrant the precise tuning of the gains in a controller. The fuzzy controllers are universally known to meet this requirement in their embedded mechanism. These controllers are widely used to cover the variations in the machine parameters and operating environments. The present study reaffirms the indispensibility of a fuzzy logic controller in mitigating the adverse effects of voltage sags in induction motors. PI/FO-PI and fuzzy logic controllers were employed in simulation designing of DVR using MATLAB/Simulink. The simulation outputs validated that DVR with the fuzzy logic control system is fast, flexible and efficient for voltage sag compensation. Performance effects of the proposed controllers are evaluated and compared based on controller's efforts and time domain indices such as IAE, ISE and ITAE. Results demonstrate that proposed fuzzy logic controller provides a smoother mitigation of voltage sag with lesser controller effort and time domain indices.
