Abstract
Utilizing Mission profile emulator (MPE) is a low cost way to test Sub-modules (SMs) in Modular Multilevel Converter (MMC), because the cost for MPE is generally much smaller than building a full-scale MMC for test. Due to the fact that arm current in MMC has extremely low current ripple, current ripple in MPE should also be well restrained to guarantee emulation accuracy. Thereby, the DC supply voltage in MPE is generally preferred to be low, because lower DC supply voltage can result in lower current ripple. However, the large voltage on filter limits the further decreasing of DC supply voltage especially when the testing current is large. Therefore, Mission Profile Emulator with resonant circuit is proposed in this paper. With the proposed control strategy, the MPE can precisely recreate the mission profiles of SMs in MMC. Moreover, with the resonant circuit, the voltage drop on filter can be greatly reduced, which further reduces the demands for DC supply voltage. Finally, simulation results verify the validation and accuracy of the proposed MPE.
