Abstract

On 11 March 1978, a terrorist attack, the so-called Coastal Road massacre, in Israel resulted in 38 dead civilians, including children, and 71 wounded. In response, Israeli forces immediately invaded Lebanon to attack terrorist bases. The Lebanese Government submitted a protest to the UN Security Council (UNSC) against the Israeli invasion. Eight days after the initial attack the UNSC called for an instant termination of military action against Lebanese integrity and withdrawal of Israeli forces from all Lebanese territory. In addition, a UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) was established to confirm the withdrawal of Israeli forces (UNSC Res 425/1978). In this chapter the ongoing UNIFIL mission is explored further.
