Abstract

The Deutsches Krebsforschungszentrum (DKFZ) was founded in 1964 on the initiative of the Heidelberg surgeon Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. K. H. Bauer, who died in 1978 at the age of 86. By decision of the government of the State of Baden-Wurttemberg, it was set up as a foundation of public law. Since 1975, it has been one of Germany’s Major Research Centers. It is financed to 90% by the Federal Government (Federal Ministry for Education, Science, Research, and Technology) and to 10% by the State of Baden-Wurttemberg (Ministry for Science, Research, and Art) on the basis of § 91 b of the German Constitution.
